A Crack at Yoga!

Hasan - "Aash be ready at 9!! Its Yoga today for P-90x!"
Isa - "Yay Hasan Chachoo I am going to do it too!!"
Ayesha- "That should work since I have another 45 minutes or so to wind everything down and Ajee will be back by then so I should be able to focus"

Focus..What a great thought!

I was trying desperately to feed Yusuf who as usual was turning every morsel down and was creating a ruckus on his high chair, which I just do not have the patience for. So I took him down and decided to give him some of the adult food - Biryani (a spicy Pakistani rice dish), which he gulped down with out a fuss along with half a banana simultaneously while running around in the family room floor (his preferred method of eating) .

Right around 8:30 Asim (Brother between Ajee and Hasan) rings the bell a hundred times and then barges in through the door (this is pretty normal at 1826)! He grabs Yusuf, who delightfully goes to him and takes him outside to show him cars (a common interest). Asim (the 3rd child at 1826)  then comes back and tells Isa "I am here to play Wii!" as he had had his eyes on Isa's new remotes and games that Ajee had just bought the day before. Isa was not exactly wanting to play at the time as he was more interested in the P90X, however as he didn't want to hurt his favorite Asim Chachoo's feelings he decided to turn it on. Which was also a little bit of a battle with Amma as it was time for her Indian Dramas as well, however she hesitantly gave permission.

Ajee arrived, and it was time for the Yoga finally. Asim said he would like to join too. So Hasan just brought the laptop down so we all could do it together in the study area instead of his room. Asim lost interest on the way to the study so it was just Isa, Hasan and I. So we started warming up and Asim comes and starts telling us about this video that he thinks everyone should watch. It’s a parody of a brown family. Hasan seems really interested in this video so he pauses his computer and opens up the video which shows a bunch of Indian teenage boys trying to make fun of brown parents. That takes a good 10 minutes.

We get back on track with the Yoga and just then Yusuf comes running and sees Hasan’s back as he was doing the upward dog (a yoga move) and has to get on it (he loves hanging out on Hasan’s back). Pretty soon Hasan looses interest in the Yoga as well and decides to go eat instead and so it’s just Isa and me. A little while later Yusuf runs in again with Amma running after him trying to feed him the food that he was refusing to eat with me a little while earlier. Like before he is the least bit interested in it, however Amma is trying her level best as she cannot stand even one little bit (of the food she so lovingly prepared) to be wasted. So I take him and distract him so Amma can dodge the last 4 bites into his mouth.

Ajee then comes and takes Yusuf from me so I can go resume my Yoga video that Isa had so kindly paused for me. Isa paused the video several times to drink water, to take off his shirt, and to go give a quick kiss to his Bestie Best.

I was finally getting into it again as the guy in the video was telling me to “close your eyes and relax” which I was doing and as soon as I open my eyes I see Yusuf crawling up under me, also trying to copy me and his Ba (Isa). So I then figure out a way to do the Yoga move while holding him, because if Isa paused that thing one more time I was going to just lose it.  Finally Ajee comes back and gets him right after he (jokingly) tripped me.

A few more upward and downward dogs later, Yusuf makes his way over our side again with a tissue in his hand cleaning the couch, the chairs and the printer I guess he is learning from his Dadi Jaan (Amma), who is also sweeping the carpeted floor while watching her Indian soaps.

 As I am taking half of Yusuf’s cleaning tissue out of his mouth, I hear Amma talking about this really interesting soap Pratigya on TV, so I just have to go and check it out for a minute or so along with Ajee, Hasan and Abba. When I get back the video is paused. I finally realize that a 90 minute (120 minutes for us) Yoga session in 1826 is just not meant to be. So I turn the video off and finish watching the rest of Pratigya with the clan.

I just spoke with my dad - My Abba after almost a week. He called me from the Jeddah Airport as he was on his way to India to visit his ill older brother, after completing his Hajj Mashallah, which is not a minor accomplishment. Just Another Manic Eid Day..Continued..

Although we arrive on time, the rush is crazy at Al-Farooq (Mosque) as Eid is on a Sunday this year. There is no parking so Ajee drops us off by the entrance. This takes a few minutes. Abba helps me get Yusuf out, while Amma gets Nani Amma out, Phuppi is carrying the bags and shawls. As I am getting the diaper bag out, I rip half of my right thumb nail..OUCH!!!..The officer wants us to hurry up as there are many cars behind us. So I take the baby from Abba, with my diaper bag (Thank heavens it’s a backpack) on my back and Isa holding my hand with the throbbing thumb and make my way to the ladies section with Amma, Phuppi and Nani Amma. We take off our shoes. A Nap...Ain't Nobody Got time for Dat!!

When I went home yesterday, I was dead tired and just wanted to snuggle into my comfy bed, relax, and possibly take a nap. A nice, refreshing, stress free nap..hmmmm, sounds so easy to some, but to me its a feat that cannot easily be accomplished. As I was dreaming about sleep,  Yusi came running, screaming "Oto Boos, Oto Boos" and showing me his new drawings (scribbles) of balls. "Wow!!! Yusuf that is just awesome!" Yusuf drawing balloons He said "awchum" and continued to follow me upstairs. As I was going to my room, thinking about my bed, the motherly guilt kicked in and made me go into Isa's room instead. He was just sitting there day dreaming with only half his work done. "Isa what's wrong, why are your spellings not done?" A Night at 1826!

It is 11:45 P.M at the Saiyed Residence on a Thursday night, I have been trying to put Yusuf down for the last hour or so but have not been able to. Ajee (My husband) finally comes in to the room and I hand over the baby to him to get a break and go down for some water. As I head down the stairs I see Hasan (Ajee's youngest brother) jumping up and down in his sweats infront of his computer in Ajee's Study (which is in fact a dining room). He is actually copying a video of the P-90 X excercise routine, Hasan's new obesession for the month. Meanwhile, Amma (Ajee's mother) is squatting sweeping (for the 2nd time today) the carpet and the foyer floor with a small hard broom ("tinke wali jharoo - specially imported from Pakistan), and a soft regular broom simultaneously. Abba is waiting for her to finish as he needs help finding something upstairs. Phuppi (Ajee's paternal aunt) just finished washing the dishes and is now watching an Indian ...

Isa's Holiday Concert!

 Last Friday evening I came home from work and hear Isa singing, or rather yelling “RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER, HAD A VERY SHINY NOSE” and then I hear an even louder Hasan yelling “RUDOLPH KI LAAL LAAL NAAK THEE AUR WO CHAMAKTI BHI THEE!!” (translation of the Christmas Carol in Urdu).   I go up quickly to see what the commotion is all about and then come to know that Isa has a holiday concert in school that is coming up and Hasan is helping him prepare for that, but is forcing him to sing it in Urdu, while Yusuf is dancing with one arm up in the air (Which is what he does at any sign of music).   The next few evenings go on to be pretty loud and disruptive with the constant practicing of this song in Urdu, in English and sometimes in both languages at the same time.      Chillin on Hun Chachoo after practice!!
